President's Message
Thirty one years ago it was just a dream, now it's an annual event, thanks to your support. ALADDIN is a story straight out of the Arabian Nights and full of magic, wonder and mystery. I think we can claim the Whitley Bay Pantomime Society owes its origin to pretty much the same theme.
ALADDIN was our first pantomime, written and produced by the late Geoff Watson and his wife, with the assistance of my wife, Marjorie, and myself. Many Sunday nights we enjoyed each others company working out the script, scene by scene, and sketch by sketch, before we were satisfied that it would work. It started out in May, during an interval in the old Priory Theatre of the Annual Whitley Bay Drama Festival. At that time there were very few pantomimes staged in the North East, and as I had worked with the Whitley Bay Lyric Society from their first show in the 1930's, I thought it was time pantomime was revived locally. Geoff Watson offered to supply a script and also produce the Pantomime. Ian Gilfillian, treasurer of the Whitley Bay social service committee , not only offered his services as treasurer but later arranged the loan of scenery held by the Lyric Society. As soon as the word got around, enthusiasm was terrific. We then had a meeting of interested parties and set up the Whitley Bay Pantomime Society, and within six months we staged ALADDIN, early in January 1965. Costumes were frantically made of remnants bought at various market stalls, or borrowed from other societies, old scenery repaired and painted. It was quite a gamble. The 9th Whitley Bay Scouts promised £150.00 if we didn't cover our costs, in fact, we more than covered them within a month of opening the priority booking, and we made a small profit enabling us to donate £150 to the Scout Building Fund.
The original enthusiasm is still with all our members, and many of our founder members are still with us.
I don't think anyone will be upset if I mention someone who has appeared in all our thirty pantomimes, someone who has often directed, written the scripts and been responsible for planning many of the spectacular scenes, and in fact is completely dedicated to pantomime - everybody's favourite - Rowland Maughan. Not of course forgetting the many other officials and helpers who make it all possible.
