President's Message
First performed as a Pantomime at Covent Garden in 1788 "Aladdin or The Wonderful Lamp" is a tale straight from that magical book "Arabian Nights". This was one of the first occasions when a fairy story was used as the basis of a pantomime and set a fashion for innumerable other Aladdin's which have been staged in British Theatres ever since. Disney version of the tale is set in Arabia but our version follows the original story set in China. Aladdin, a poor and rather idle young man, is spotted by a powerful Magician from Africa who lures him in to a magical enterprise and then traps him inside a cave, where our hero finds an old lamp and a lot of mischief! "Aladdin" was the very first Pantomime the Society staged in January 1965, but the original enthusiasm which launched it is still with us and we hope you enjoy our 2002 Playhouse Panto as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. So now sit back and allow our Genie of the Lamp to transport you to Old Pekin.
Mr. Ernie Scorer, President
