President's Message
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the society's annual pantomime of "Babes in the Wood".
The history of Pantomime goes back to the Roman times although it was revised to its present form in the late 1800's. All good pantomimes are based on fairy tales, containing topical jokes with extravagant scenery and costumes. The cast always has a principal boy - played by a girl and a dame - played by a man.
Our pantomime is based on a 15th century story called "The Children of the Wood". The wood in Norfolk, known as Waylands Wood was where the children's uncle was said to live. Robin Hood also existed but lived some 200 years earlier. He met and married Maid Marion and became a popular folk hero because of his fight for freedom from the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin is said to have had a hideout in a huge oak tree, which can still be seen today.
However with proper disregard for history we invite you to sit back and enjoy the Whitley Bay version of "Babes in the Wood".
Jim Graham President
